Director’s Notes
"The world in which you were born is just one model of reality. Other cultures and others peoples’ experiences are not failed attempts at being you; they are unique manifestations of the human spirit." - Wade Davis
I love this quote. It is simultaneously very humbling and very validating. The second part is easy, and we have no problem saying "my life and my perspective are valid!" But what about others? What about those people whose life has taken them down a road that we ourselves would never travel? Sometime we chose the road and sometimes the road is chosen for us, and sometimes it may be a little of both. It's not always easy to know how we got on the road we find ourselves on. The women you will meet tonight will ponder this, laughing and crying and rolling their eyes along the way.
Eve Ensler’s interviews invited woman to talk about their own unique manifestations without apology. And did they talk! With frankness and humor they tell us about their own model of reality. The conclusions they arrive at range from crystal clarity to not always clear or even complete yet, but then again, coming of age, sexual awakening, loss of innocence, growing old and the general foibles of life are rarely topics that can be tied up in a neat little package. And I don't think we should really try to. Perhaps we should just listen and ponder for a bit and ask ourselves the same questions and see where it takes us. If you allow yourself to look in the mirror, you may find that you have a lot in common with all the unique manifestations you will see tonight.
