Pottstown Oil Spill Accident and Need for our Help

A few weeks ago the UU Fellowship of Pottstown experienced a devastating oil leak. Apparently, during a cold snap, we had a pipe burst and about 150 gallons of heating fuel leaked out onto the property and into a small creek along the edge of the property. A neighbor called us to let us know we might have a problem. The Board of Trustees sprang into action and we called the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the EPA right away.

We also contacted a company to come and begin cleaning up the creek to prevent contamination down stream. We had no idea what it would cost, but knew we had to take care of the spill in the creek immediately. Two weeks ago we received our first bill of $27,000. We are a very small congregation of 45 members and this is already more than half our operating budget. And they are not yet finished. We still need to have the soil around the building removed. We anticipate the final costs being close to $45,000. Our insurance company is dragging its heals; and we discovered only too late that even if they do cover us, they will only cover up to $10,000-(Ironically checking the policy was on the Board agenda for February.)

We would appreciate any support that you can give us. The future of this Unitarian Universalist community is in jeopardy as the costs for the cleanup are more than our members can afford at this time.

We thank you in advance for your generosity in our time of need and look forward to many more years of service to the Pottstown area.

Checks can be made out to UUCA with “Pottstown Help” in the memo line.

Sincerely,

Rev. Paul Langston-Daley                   Mary Alsayegh

Celebrating Our Beloved Community

Bad Weather Policy

On inclement Sundays, turn on your radio to WNAV (1430) or WBAL(1090) and listen for an announcement regarding cancellation of UUCA Sunday services. You may also call the church to hear if  there is a recorded message (410 266-8044).

On inclement weekdays, the UUCA office will shorten office hours exactly as does the public schools in Anne Arundel County. If schools announce a one hour delay, the office will open at 10AM instead of 9AM. If there is a two hour delay, we will open at 11AM. If schools close early, the office will close early (normal closing time is 4PM). If the schools close, the office will be closed — office volunteers should NOT report to the office if schools are closed.

For all other events held in the church, such as 333 Coffeehouse, Full Circle services, committee meetings, room rentals, etc., please call the person responsible for the event or listen to the radio to learn if the event has been cancelled.

Retreat Registration begins!

It’s time to register for the All-Church Retreat to be held April 25-27, 2008 at the Hashawha Environmental Center in Westminster, MD.   By popular demand the “Egg-citing” Challenge will be back again this year –with a new twist, of course.    The wonderfully talented Janell Sitton-Coats is expected for some singing around the campfire and you will have a chance to email those baby pictures again this year for a fun “guess who” game.  These are just some of many wonderful community building activities we have planned for you this year.   We will spend Friday after 5pm till Sunday noon, enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings, rustic cabin accommodations, and far deeper sense of community than can happen during a Sunday social hour!  It’s only $60 per adult for the whole weekend (including 5 meals); children (5-13) $55.  If you sign up by March 16th, get an early bird discount of $5!  ($55/adult; $50/child)  We’re making it even easier to register this year by making it possible to register online and use a credit card.   Check www.uuca-md.org for more information or contact Debbie Cole (debcole.email@yahoo.com; 410-969-7986) or Lisa Combs (lisacombs@verizon.net)

Keeping the Faith

By Fred Muir, Senior Minister

The last four weeks have been busy, intense, and full of promise.

The weeks prior to the January 27th Congregational Meeting were filled with discussion, reflection, discernment and planning.  While there was concern about getting the supra-quorum that we needed to conduct business (35% of the membership), we went well over.  And I know that people were shocked by the intensity of feeling during the meeting and after: I canceled an out of town trip and spent over fifteen hours listening to nearly 150 members share their experiences, feelings and thoughts.  They also shared their hope: In every conversation there was the strongly felt desire to take the lessons and energies of the Meeting and transform them into hope and vision.

Little did I know when I spoke on January 6th about coming events at UUCA and how we needed to share our hopes and dreams for the New Year, I never knew how important these words would be by February; little did I know when I wrote my January newsletter article which urged you to attend a “Revisioning Workshop” just how critical this could be for our community; little did I know in January that I would hear so many say how important it is to have an opportunity to listen to others about what they want for UUCA and what they want our church to become.

What I have heard in the last weeks is that UUCA is central in the lives of so many of you.  It is clearer to me now than ever before that it’s time to talk with and listen to each other about the promise of the faith community we hold so close to our hearts.  This is what we will be striving for at the Revisioning Workshops.  You can sign up at church (next time you’re here or call it in) or you can go online right now: go to www.uuca-md.org and on the home page there’s a link called “on-line event registration.”  There are four workshops – only sign up for one.  Child care is available if you request it.

Can we count on you showing up and participating?  There are a lot of people who expect you to be present, they’re counting on you.  It’s my hope that half of our members will turn out.

See you soon and keep the faith,

            Fred

7th annual Wintertime Red Cross Blood Drive at UUCA

Unitarian Universalist Church hosts 7th Annual Wintertime Red Cross Blood Drive Drive began in response to tragedy of 9-11.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis is hosting its 7th Annual Wintertime Red Cross Blood Drive on Saturday, February 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Originally a once a year drive, the church is now hosting two drives a year.  The church's first Red Cross Blood Drive, in February 2002, was in response to the tragedy fo 9-11.  Realizing there was an urgent need for blood year 'round, not just in response to a single catastrophe, church volunteers have been organizing drives in memory of the victims of that terrorist attack.

The blood drive will be held in the sanctuary of the church, located at 333 DuBois Road, just off Bestgate and Old Bestgate Roads in Annapolis.

If you would like to donate blood, but are unsure whether or not you are eligible to donate, either visit the Red Cross Blood Donation website, www.GiveLife.org or call 1-800-GIVELIFE .  A live phone operator can answer questions at the 800 number.

To schedule an appointment, contact Wendi Winters at 410-349-0945 or email wendi@quantumstep.com .

The blood you donate today could save three lives tomorrow!

Web of Life

By Rev Amber Beland, Assistant Minister for Life span Faith Development

Reflecting on the past few weeks these words spoke to me and I share them with you in the hopes that they will speak to you as well, they are by Margaret A. Keip.  She says,

“We are always dancing, often delicately and with difficulty, on the twin horns of dilemma.  In most instances of human conflict, both horns are in some way true.  It is their truth that creates the dance, and it is in this very dance that we are free.  Whenever an idea reigns unchallenged by another point of view, there is no freedom because there is no choice.  Thus, conflict is the cost of freedom.  If we treasure choice we must also learn to honor conflict and discover it may grant us peace and strength and stature.  In devotion to the cause of freedom, disagreement may indeed unite us.”

I hope that as we all move forward we can hold onto the idea that all we go through may in the end serve to bring us closer together.

May it be so – Blessings,

   Amber

Book Recommendation

During the upcoming years, UUCA will be headed into uncharted waters with many issues to resolve. How will we handle our growth and simultaneously diversify the congregation?  Hopefully this transition will be thoughtful, inclusive and most importantly continue to inspire congregants towards their own spiritual growth and search for purpose and meaning.  To this end, the UUCA Worship Lay Ministers would like to strongly encourage  members to read an excellent, thought provoking book, "The Almost Church" by Michael Durall (available in our bookstore.)  Please engage us and others about where the UU Faith is headed.

Resource Stewardship

We are changing to serve you better.

Did you know that UUCA spends $250/month processing recurring commitment payments with Parish Pay?

Effective February 15, 2008, UUCA will be encouraging members to sign up for Electronic Commitments Payments with Visa and Mastercard using Access ACS.  The staff has been using ACS for the past two years now and we have discovered that this integrated system gives us more flexibility in improving our membership and financial records through the use of there people and contribution module.

With limited resources and a need for faster, more effective communications and consistent collection of contributions we have discovered that ACS offers us the best services for our limited resources. Members can sign up for classes, purchase tickets to all of our events such as 333 Coffeehouse, Music for Peace &Justice Concert Series, Dignity Players performances and the All Church Retreat. It’s user friendly and automatically each transaction  once you establish your username and password.

The cost is much cheaper than our current system which means more of your contribution goes to support programming and improving the quality of the services we provide. If you have not enrolled in on-line giving please do so today.  To enroll log on to https://secure.accessacs.com/access/memberlogin.aspx com If you do not have a user name and password, fill in the following information First Name, Last Name and e-mail address and select Find Me. An e-mail will be sent to you with your login information.

Your contact information must match the information that we current have in the system. If you have any questions please contact Christol Medley at 410-266-8044 ext 102 admin@uuca-md.org or Susan Eckert at 410-266-8044 ext 110 or membership@uuca-md.org.

Finance Notes – Neighboring Property Purchased

Last Wednesday February 6, UUCA closed on the  purchase of 1915 North Lawrence Avenue, the house  and 1-acre lot west of the Fahs House. This followed the January 27 vote by the Congregation authorizing the Board of Trustees to make the purchase, and a February 3 special Board Meeting at which the Board approved the purchase.

Many, both in the Congregation and on the Board, might have wished for more time to consider this decision. However, we were faced with sellers who apparently had other parties ready to buy the property if we did not. Despite uncertainties, in the end the Board judged that the potential benefits of buying the land outweighed the risks. Those benefits include the potential ability to develop up to 40-50 new parking spaces, possible. residential or multi-use space close to the Fahs House, expanded options available to planners for building expansion and site development, and control of important land at UUCA’s periphery.

The immediate next step is to get the new property surveyed and fenced. We will also ask the architectural firm that we’ve just hired for site master planning to include the new property in their analyses. This will give us, within several months, a better idea of how to proceed with the new property. It could also suggest to us whether we should pursue the additional purchase of the property at 1911 North Lawrence Avenue. In the meantime, the Board also voted February 10 to look into obtaining an option for first right of refusal on 1911 North Lawrence Avenue.

As UUCA enters a new phase of its path to the future, the Board and the Building Committee certainly will welcome your opinions and input. The Revisioning Sessions that will occur February 16 through March 3 would be good opportunities to express your ideas.

Religious Exploration Survey: a special RE Curriculum Review Committee has been hard at work for several months and has designed a survey of the entire congregation – adults with no children enrolled in the RE program as well as parents.  The responses will give us precious information to set a direction for the R.E. program in years to come.  You are urged to fill it out online - it only takes about 10-15 minutes to do it.  The survey was sent out via e-mail last week, and is available on the UUCA website at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2fjTStJhePUEYBeo1GzkPlQ_3d_3d

Evensong

Guides participants in an exploration of individual life journeys as they share their thoughts, experiences, doubts, and beliefs about traditional religious concepts.  The core of Evensong is listening.  Through songs, readings, and sharing, the participants build personal relationships while using “deep listening” to hear and ask serious religious questions related to various life topics. In order to achieve the highest benefit from the program and to build relationships with the other participants, attendance is expected at all meetings.  Occasional absences should be reported to group leaders prior to the meeting.

DATES: eight sessions starting Thursday, February 21

TIME: 7:30-9 pm

FACILITATORS: Tricia Hopkins and Sue Bupp

Building a Group for Daily Practice of Intentional Living:

Looking for a few additional participants. Please join us in a group aimed at building a daily practice of intentional living through the use of meditation, discussion and reminders.

We will meet twice a month to develop our meditation practices and discuss why it is so difficult for us to slow down and develop a regular practice.  Our aim will be to find ways to remember our intentions in our daily lives, using intentional walking, listening, talking and breathing. We hope to change occasional intention in people's lives  into regular intentional doing by living in the present moment. We will read and  discuss Thich Nhat Hanh's new book, "The Art of Power".  All are welcome!

Richard Crenshaw will usually lead; he brings 20 years of experience with the teaching of Gurdjieff and ten years of experience with the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh.

We will also host speakers who have successful alternative practices. We had a trial run of this class in the Fall,  but need a few more participants. If you are interested or want more information,  we need to know ASAP; contact Richard at richard@maggiesmusic.com or Tracy Gill  at tgillannap@gmail.com

Partner Church Sunday is Coming

March 2 will be our annual Partner Church Sunday service.  This year in addition to looking at our connection with our partners in Rava, Romania, we shall also examine our Transylvanian Unitarian roots.  What are the historical foundations of our liberal faith tradition that are still a part of our partners’ lives and relevant for us today?  Fred Muir will deliver the sermon and members who have visited Rava will share some of their memories, attachments, and connections that have emerged from their travels.  The choir will provide the music.

This year we shall continue our celebration of our Partner Church connection the following weekend when a professional story teller will share Transylvanian and Hungarian stories during the monthly Second Sunday Intergenerational Potluck event on March 9 from 4 to 7.  Our partners in Rava live in Romania but are ethnically Hungarian.  This is an intergenerational event and should be fun and educational for the entire family.

One additional aspect of our Partner Church celebration this March will be on display in the halls of our church.  The Gallery display will feature photographs, drawings, and artifacts of Rava and Transylvania.

The next meeting for all who are interested in our Partner Church Projects is Tuesday, February 12, from 7:30 to 9 in the church library.  Newcomers are welcome and encouraged to participate.  Please contact Heather Millar at heathermillar@gmail.com or 410 544-8973 for additional information
