Setting Sail

Life of Questions

Nearly every religious faith has a doubting tradition. Questioning, as we have learned from revelations regarding the saintly-like life of Mother Theresa as well as many other respected figures of faith, is part of living for nearly everyone. In a reading from our UU hymnal it states: “Doubt is the handmaiden of truth.” How do you mix faith and doubt? This series of monthly classes with Fred Muir will use Ten Eternal Questions: Wisdom, Insight, and Reflections for Life's Journey as a text. Reading the book and one page of reflective writing are expected for each class. The book is available at the church's bookstore.

DATES: 9 monthly Sessions on third Mondays
Starting October 15 through June 16
TIME: 7:30-9:30 pm
FACILITATOR: Fred Muir

Building the World We Dream About

This curriculum seeks to interrupt the workings of racism and transform how people from different racial/ethnic groups understand and relate to each other. It creates an opportunity wherein participants can practice dreaming our world otherwise, and then commit to new, intentional ways of being. As UU's, we hope developing anti-racist, anti-oppressive and multicultural habits and skills lead us to actually build the multicultural world we dream about. We are a test congregation for the Unitarian Universalist Association and we hope that you will consider committing to a program that will be transformative for our congregation. We will meet every 1 st and 3 rd Sunday from 1-3pm from January through December. We need to have 18 to 20 participants to hold this course and regular attendance is required.

DATES: 1st and 3rd Sundays starting Sunday, January 6 and running through December 2008
TIME: 1-3:00 pm
FACILITATORS: Roxanne Kibben and Diane Goforth

Evensong

Guides participants in an exploration of individual life journeys as they share their thoughts, experiences, doubts, and beliefs about traditional religious concepts. The core of Evensong is listening. Through songs, readings, and sharing, the participants build personal relationships while using “deep listening” to hear and ask serious religious questions related to various life topics. In order to achieve the highest benefit from the program and to build relationships with the other participants, attendance is expected at all meetings. Occasional absences should be reported to group leaders prior to the meeting.

DATES: eight sessions starting Thursday, February 21
TIME: 7:30-9 pm
FACILITATORS: Tricia Hopkins and Sue Bupp
